People Spotlight: Darren Brace, Sales Manager

June 18, 2026

At Bonham & Brook, we love celebrating the people who make this place what it is. Darren Brace, our London-based Sales Manager, is one of those people. His journey from psychology graduate to seasoned sales professional is a story about following your instincts, playing to your strengths, and finding the right environment to do your best work. We sat down with Darren to hear it in his own words.

His Journey at Bonham & Brook

Darren will be the first to tell you that R&D tax was never the plan. After graduating with a Psychology degree and heading to London with his sights set on a career in sales, a recruiter pointed him toward a firm in the R&D tax space. He arrived as an SDR, learned the industry from scratch, and spent three and a half years there during what he describes as the formative years of the R&D scheme.

After nearly a decade away from the sector, he found his way back, and Bonham & Brook felt like the obvious destination. He already knew Dom Bonham, David,Tom,Vish, Rory, and Haran well, and had a genuine respect for how the business was being built. There is a particularly nice detail in all of this: Dom Bonham had once been an SDR on Darren’s previous team. Returning to work alongside him, this time at a firm Dom had helped found, says a lot about the relationships at the heart of Bonham & Brook.

Today Darren leads the London sales team, working with a group of Business Developers and SDRs who he is clearly proud of.

Challenges

Darren has watched the R&D tax industry change a great deal over the course of his career. In the early days, success was largely about volume and getting in front of as many clients as possible. Now it is a different game entirely. Compliance and quality are what separate the good firms from the rest, and businesses that have not kept up with that shift are feeling it.

He is also honest about a challenge closer to home. His BDs and SDRs are talented, hardworking, and have genuinely strong client stories to share, but like many people in sales, they have not fully tapped into what a consistent LinkedIn presence can do for building trust and opening doors. It is something Darren is working on actively with the marketing team, and something he sees as a real opportunity for the business.

Achievements

If you ask Darren what he is most proud of, he talks about his team. The London sales team has a strong dynamic, takes feedback on board, works hard, and delivers consistently. That does not happen by accident. It is the result of clear expectations, genuine trust, and a leadership approach shaped by years of experience building sales organisations from the ground up, including scaling teams in the equally compliance-heavy world of medical publishing.

His advice to anyone starting out in sales reflects exactly that experience. “Know your own strengths. Different styles can both win. Avoid mimicking others and double down on what you are good at. That is how you ramp faster.”

It is simple, practical, and the kind of thing that only makes sense once you have seen enough people succeed and fail to know it is true.

Culture

Darren is candid about the contrast between Bonham & Brook and where he has worked before. His previous environment was high-pressure and high-churn, the kind of place where hitting numbers was the only thing that mattered. Bonham & Brook is something quite different.

“The owners genuinely care. It is close-knit, trust-based, and people come first. Leadership prioritises your wellbeing before your targets.”

That has made a real difference for Darren personally. As a new parent, the autonomy and flexibility he has here has allowed him to perform well without the burnout that came with earlier chapters of his career. The balance between accountability and trust, he says, is exactly right.

Looking Ahead and Personal Reflections

What excites Darren most right now is what Bonham & Brook is building beyond R&D. The firm has taken the same compliance-first approach that made it strong in R&D and is applying it to new products, with energy being a notable example. For Darren, that is a mark of a business that really knows what it stands for.

Away from work, Darren runs his own club motorsport racing team, taking to the circuit 6 or 7 times in a year in a setup he has built and managed himself. It is a nice reflection of a culture that invests in its people beyond the day job.
