At Bonham & Brook, our people are what set us apart, and Matthew’s story is a clear example of why. Over three years at B&B, he’s grown from Sales Manager into a Senior Sales Manager role, but ask him what he’s most proud of, and he won’t point to his own numbers. He’ll point to his team.
Matty’s route into sales started with a media and communications degree, a background he credits with fuelling the creativity he now applies to problem solving and selling in less conventional ways. His career took him from account management into new business leadership, then into SaaS sales, before he moved into R&D tax at a large advisory firm.
There, he learned the sector from the ground up and played a key role in scaling its Sales function from a handful of people into several full teams. He joined Bonham & Brook to help grow the Manchester office further, support our London team, and has since become instrumental to Bonham & Brook’s rapid growth journey.
That move wasn’t just a change of employer. It was a change of philosophy. He describes his previous firm as a high-volume operation, with internal rivalry as much a part of the culture as external competition. At B&B, the model couldn’t be more different: a collaborative culture built on selective partnerships and genuine cross office teamwork, where healthy competition is encouraged without anyone undercutting each other. It’s a shift Matty says has made the work both healthier and more effective.
One of the bigger challenges he’s had to navigate is the R&D tax industry’s reputation. Negative press has made some genuinely eligible businesses hesitant to claim funds they’re entitled to. His answer has been to lead with credibility: a compliance first approach, robust case studies, and a clear, honest articulation of value. In simple terms, he sums up B&B’s edge as compliance, accuracy (often identifying qualifying costs businesses hadn’t considered), and time, freeing clients up to focus on running their business rather than navigating tax relief themselves.
Matty won the coveted Sales MVP in his very first year at B&B, but that’s not the achievement he leads with. In his early days, he recognised his team needed more support to develop, so he made a point of working closely with them, week in and week out, to help SDRs grow into BDs.What he’s most proud of is what’s come since: watching those same team members go on to win BD of the Year and MVP themselves. For Matty, that’s the real marker of success, seeing the people he’s developed surpass what he achieved himself. Today, he oversees a team of around seventeen across Manchester and London.
Matty puts real thought into who joins his team, prioritising trainability and team fit over formal qualifications. Work ethic, tenacity, and teamwork matter more to him than a polished CV, and he’s quick to point out that many of B&B’s top performers don’t have a university degree, learning agility, in his view, matters far more.
Matty’s advice to anyone starting out at B&B is simple: “Outwork and outlearn, stay humble, and treat every call and meeting as a chance to improve.” As he puts it, the moment you think you’ve got it all figured out is the moment you start to slip.
Looking ahead, Matty is keen to play a key role in Bonham & Brook’s next growth phase. A bit part of this new era will focus on strengthening internal collaboration across teams, and on putting a spotlight into the great work we do in the R&D space – making sure B&B gets the recognition it deserves for our compliance rigour and specialist expertise. Matty is looking forward to creating the kinds of client success stories that truly showcase what B&B does best.
At Bonham & Brook, we are proud to foster an environment where people like Matty can thrive, innovate, and lead. If you are looking to build your career in a company that values ownership, growth, and impact, we would love to hear from you.
