His Journey at Bonham & Brook
Vishal’s route into R&D tax started a world away from tax altogether. After an Economics degree, he began his career in retail before moving into a pharmaceuticals, where he worked across finance and business development, building a strong commercial and analytical foundation early on. It was from there that he entered the world of R&D Tax, starting out in a commercial role before moving across into consulting.
His career since has taken him through some contrasting environments. He spent around five years at a large, specialist R&D tax firm, an experience he still looks back on fondly, having stayed close friends with former colleagues to this day. From there he moved into the Big Four world, sharpening his technical expertise further.
He joined Bonham & Brook late 2023, having built a strong reputation through his network, and quickly proved his value, moving from an initial contract role to a permanent position on the strength of his work.
Today, Vishal brings around a decade of experience in R&D Tax to the role, and he’s currently working towards his CTA qualification on top of being ATT qualified. That technical grounding is matched by a genuinely hands-on streak: outside of work, he’s a keen DIYer, always taking on some kind of home improvement project, big or small. It’s the same instinct that shows up in how he approaches his work, a preference for practical, hands-on problem solving that mirrors his analytical mindset.
Challenges
Vishal’s path hasn’t been without its harder moments. Moving between such different environments means adapting to very different ways of working each time, and finding your feet isn’t always an easy thing to work through.
More recently, the challenge has been a different kind: as HMRC’s scrutiny of R&D tax relief has increased, Vishal has had to help build the structure, accountability, and quality within his team needed to meet rising compliance demands, all while keeping the team culture he values most intact.
Achievements
Since joining, Vishal has played a key role in helping build and develop Bonham & Brook’s financial consultancy function from the ground up. But when you ask him what he’s proudest of, his answer isn’t about a process or a number. It’s about people. Watching colleagues grow into taking real ownership of complex work is what he points to first.
Culture
At Bonham & Brook he describes the culture as “family through and through.” It’s a transparent structure, one that makes space for difficult conversations in service of getting better, not just going through the motions. As Vishal puts it, at B&B people are “friends first and colleagues second.”
Looking Ahead and Personal Reflections
As the role has evolved, with HMRC’s increased scrutiny and evolving compliance requirements around R&D tax relief reshaping the day to day, Vishal’s focus has shifted towards building the structure, accountability, and quality within his team needed to meet the standards expected of a firm like B&B.
His advice to anyone starting out at Bonham & Brook reflects that same mindset: be curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to challenge ideas, as long as you can back it up with well grounded rationale.
